Clinical Significance

Lidocaine is used in the therapy of cardiac arrhythmias. After suspected myocardial infarction, monitoring lidocaine in serum during infusions helps to establish and maintain adequate prophylactic or therapeutic drug concentration and avoid toxicity.

Lidocaine concentration determinations are most useful when the result is obtained soon after the sample is drawn, due to the drug's half-life (74 to 140 minutes), and the patient's potentially changing condition (can alter the drug's distribution, metabolism, and elimination).
