Clinical Significance
Theophylline is used in the treatment of bronchospasm associated with bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. Because of the narrow therapeutic index and the wide inter-individual variability in the rate of theophylline metabolism and clearance, virtually every patient receiving theophylline should have serum concentrations monitored. Measurements obtained with this assay are used in the diagnosis and treatment of theophylline overdose or in monitoring levels of theophylline to help ensure appropriate therapy.
